Some 35,000 residents have signed up so far through the federally-run exchanges, the department said.
The options are particularly important for those without access to employer-sponsored insurance, as the federal government has broadened the eligibility criteria and narrowed the set of plans available on its marketplaces.

Those who have been able to sign up in the past few weeks include:
A recent college graduate and his wife
A 42-year-old corporate recruiter with her three children
A retired IT professional and his spouse
A 36-year-old with multiple sclerosis and an associate's degree
A 62-year-old who was previously uninsured, his 47-year-old wife and her eight children
A 53-year-old single mother of three
A 58-year-old jobless man who used to work in construction and lives in a military family housing area
A 54-year-old woman who was laid off from her job in transportation
Some of the residents told CBS Pittsburgh affiliate WPXI they signed up after seeing television advertisements by the insurer Aetna, which became the first to offer coverage on the federal exchange on Oct. 1.
Overall, about 35,000 people in the state have signed up for health insurance since the exchanges opened, the department said.
In the first six months, an estimated 721,000 residents in the state were uninsured, the department said. By the end of the year, more than one in four Pennsylvanians will be covered by health insurance through the state's Medicaid program, which mostly covers low-income residents.
Earlier this month, the state's chief health officer, Dr. Thomas Farley, said 95 percent of the state's uninsured will have health insurance by the end of next year.
